SUMMARY:Lecture about the History of Pool Park
DESCRIPTION:Pool Park is a large mansion with its adjacent buildings and walled garden around 2 miles from Ruthin towards Clawddnewydd. Built in the 1820s for the Bagot family\, it remained in their ownership until the 1920s\, when it was briefly owned by Tate and Lyle (the sugar refiners)\, and then as a wing of the Denbigh Hospital until its closure in the 1990s. Speakers include local historian Arnold Hughes and Denbighshire Conservation Officer Chris Evans\, but also Andrew and Louisa Godfrey from Godfrey Group who have purchased the site\, and will be showing and outlining their exciting plans.

Hundreds of thousands of Welsh women signed a petition gathered by a few prominent ladies in an attempt to encourage the United States of America to join the League of Nations to ensure peace in the aftermath of World War One. Bethan will be speaking about the petition and how efforts are being made to commemorate it in Art and Craft.

DESCRIPTION:With the project to restore the Town Clock starting within a few weeks after the festival\, this is an opportunity to learn more about the project and the clock’s history. Built in 1883 to commemorate the life and service of Joseph Peers to Ruthin and the local area\, it is an icon of the town and was designed by the prominent Victorian architect John Douglas. Attendees are to congregate at the Old Courthouse at 1.30pm before walking over and getting a sneak peek of inside the Clock as well!

There can be little doubt that Nantclwyd’s garden is one of the best in the Ruthin area\, with a range of different flowers and plants to view as well as the Lord’s Garden with its newly repaired rear wall with excellent views of the mediaeval walls of Ruthin Castle. DESCRIPTION:Firth Flock Flowers are a relatively new venture started in 2022 who hand grow flowers on a small farm in the Graigfechan area. Sustainability is the centre of the business with the flowers grown organically in harmony with wildlife\, with ducks providing pest control and the fertiliser from a flock of native Black Welsh Mountain sheep. The workshop which will have resources and refreshments available\, is an opportunity to learn the craft of making flower crowns as well as other floristry skills!

The shop is full of items which are available to purchase for re-use ranging from household utensils and paint\, to books and furniture. Resource is a not for profit social enterprise which also operates the café at Crown House on Well Street as well as a store on Lon Parcwr. They will have chairs for hire on this day as well for people to use at the festival’s Top of Town event!

While the Manorhaus has been a popular venue in the town for decades with an excellent reputation for its food\, the Picturehaus is a newer addition\, with films shown in a room at the venue which has a real cinema atmosphere. Attendees are expected to book in advance at the Manorhaus\, as well as arrive by around 7pm to allow time to have the meal. An event for all foodies and film lovers.

Both events are open to the public and everyone is welcome to experience their performances.

DESCRIPTION:Daily trips around one of Ruthin’s most iconic buildings with a member of Denbighshire County Council’s Heritage Service. The Gaol was in use to incarcerate law breakers for several centuries with the frontage facing Clwyd Street built in 1774 and the main ‘Pentonville’ block in the 1860s. After the Gaol closed in 1916\, it then became a munitions factory during the Second World War before its current use as the County Archive and Museum / Visitor Attraction until the present day.

DESCRIPTION:Included with normal admission prices  \nA fun activity for the whole family at the town’s historic Gaol with attendees attempting to break out of the prison which is no small achievement! The Gaol’s very purpose was to keep people locked in until it closed in 1916\, and only a very small number of people managed to escape including the renowned Coch Bach y Bala at various times during his career including the last time he escaped before his tragic death. Attendees will be accompanied by Denbighshire Heritage Service staff.

DESCRIPTION:A guided tour around one of Ruthin’s most historic gardens which is maintained by volunteers. The garden includes the Lord’s Garden which has been in use for around six centuries\, with various uses in different sections such as a wildflower garden and vegetable growing area. The Lord’s Garden was restored around 10 years ago with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund\, and is the rear part of the garden of the house which is the oldest timber framed house in Wales and a historic gem in the town

DESCRIPTION:The Welsh language tradition where two competing teams from different areas go against each other in several poetry categories such as sonnet and englyn\, with a judge in the middle to adjudicate the entries of both teams and award points accordingly. Whoever has the most points at the end of the competitive stages win the Stomp. The event held in the function room at the Feathers Bar\, with possibly some local entertainment to follow the Stomp.
